A Big Project Ending

After building a great relationship with Decmil Australia a few years ago on the Yandin Wind Farm project, Vernice were awarded the opportunity to work with Decmil again to upgrade the logistics road that links the Great Eastern Highway to Covalent's Mount Holland site.

A total 113km of road was to be constructed and sealed. Mobilisation of a number of our fleet commenced in October 2023 and our team have been working hard with other contractors and Decmil in getting this large stretch of road up to scratch and ready for sealing.

Machinery on site include;

2 X Graders with GPS, Base Station and LPS
1 X Semi Watercart
1 X 6 Wheeler Watercart
3 X Rollers (Dry Hire)
1 X Front End Loader
1 X 375 Dozer

This project has provided the opportunity for our employees to upskill. One example, Olivia Ferguson perfecting the Front End Loader and loading road trains all day. Our team and Decmil were extremely happy with her skill, ability, attitude and attention to detail, all whilst being efficient and keeping up with the growing demands of gravel supply.

Alongside constructing a road, there were a number of cuts that were required, that is where the large dozer came into play. Ripping and pushing out large hills to ensure the road design was met.

Vernice thanks all employees involved in the project and appreciate the hard work and difficulty in living away from home.

Vernice would also like to take this opportunity to thank Decmil for another great project. There is a little bit more to go, however, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

2023/24 EOFY Wrap Up

June 2024

June is a crazy month for any business large or small. It is the month we aim to tie off loose ends, get all the paperwork in order and ensure a smooth transition into the new financial year.

This June found our gear and operators all across the state! We still have a number of machines out on the Covalent Logistics Road project. This project is another large project that involves upgrading 113 km of road, graders, rollers, watercart, loaders and dozers are all on site with a handful of operators living the mine life.

The Crushing Duo, in Thomas and Max headed north to sunny Shark Bay this month for a total of 3 weeks. Crushing and Screening material for Main Roads WA. It's peak season up there at the moment and it was a little struggle to find accommodation, the guys stayed at Nanga Station and had a deadline. They, absolutely, smashed it! It was not just Max and Thomas that had fun up there. The convoy to mobilise and demobilise was half the fun for our truck drivers! The guys were up early and drover together all the way to site taking a couple of days to arrive and the same demobilising. The convoy consisted of:

Prime Mover #1 and trailer with the oversize crusher;
Pilot vehicle;
Prime Mover #2 with service truck and screening plant;
Prime Mover #3 with 30T excavator;
Prime Mover #4 with front end loader and;
Water Truck.

More local jobs in and around the Shire of Toodyay are coming to fruition and larger tenders and RFQ's are coming through as we progress through winter towards spring.

We also still have our 2 D7 and D9 Dozers in the Gascoyne region pushing gravel for the Great Northern Highway upgrades and rehabbing existing pits.

The crew are ticking along nicely, and we are working towards some changes that will help streamline processes, production and make work safer!

Captain Bligh - Bicentennial #10

Being just 1 of 16 'Bicentennials' built to commemorate Mack Australia's bicentennial year, Captain Bligh was quickly snapped up by Vernice as soon as it hit the market.

It was decided that a limited edition of unique Super-Liner II prime movers would be produced to commemorate 25-year Anniversary of Mack Trucks in Australia. These 16 trucks were to carry the names of famous historical people that had a significant impact in Australia's history. Originally, there was going to be a total of 20 trucks, however, it was capped at 16 and the build started. Businesses wrote letters to secure their limited-edition truck. The task set out by Mack Australia was for businesses to choose names from a pre-determined list. Famous navigators and explorers such as Captain James Cook, Sturt, Kennedy, Leichhardt were included on the list, as well as Govenor Phillip and Governor William Bligh of Bounty.

William Bligh 1754-1817 was the 4th Governor of New South Whales. He was the captain of the ship called the HMS Bounty during the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. The Mutiny on the Bounty occurred when Bligh’s crew rebelled against his harsh leadership and set him adrift in a small boat in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Despite this adversity, Bligh’s remarkable seamanship allowed him to navigate the treacherous waters over a 48-day journey to finally reach safety.

This truck symbolises longstanding resilience, sense of adventure and the spirit of exploration. It serves as a rolling tribute to Australia’s rich maritime history and the daring voyages undertaken by early explorers.

What a Weekend! - WA Mack Muster 2024

The weekend kicked off with the Sponsors Dinner with 360 people filling the room to raise money for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. We had a full table representing Vernice. The night raised an incredible $296,000 with the live auction. Big items were generously donated including a NTS Trailer by NTS, and a Harley Davidson by Mack Trucks Australia.

Saturday night, Stephen, Michael, Josh and Dean were amongst 145 other drivers at the Driver Dinner. The trucks were in place ready for the big day and the guys got to talk all things trucking!

330 trucks and about 8,000 people rolled through the gates Sunday, making the WA Mack Muster, arguably, the best truck show in the country.

We would like to thank the small, but hard-working committee of just 8 incredible people. Steven, Gerald, Clem, Jason, Rosco, Renee, Brandon and Matt, we cannot wait for Mack Muster 2026!

Unfortunately, we didn't drive away with any awards, however, it was a massive success. Thank you to all the sponsors, organisers and people who came to see the trucks. Thank you for stopping by and chatting to the guys about our trucks and the Bicentennial, it was a showstopper!

The past 24 months in review

This year (and the last) were memorable and historic years for us.

What happened in 2022?

- Win at the Mack Muster - Best Mack!

- A number of road construction upgrades and quoted over 80 projects.

- Purchased a number of new machines

- Renewed our Senior First Aid Course

- Passed our Full Compliance Audit for our HSEQ accreditation.

- Watched the new shed be constructed and filled!!

- Celebrated a milestone birthday for Director Stephen!

- Celebrated 50 years of Vernice and published a milestone video.

- Thanked and farewelled our head and one-of-a-kind mechanic, Rudy Siebermaier.

- Said goodbye to our Founder, Father and Pop, Vern Ferguson, and a long-term employee and mate, Ian Harrison.

We celebrated a significant milestone, our 50-year anniversary. We had a great turn out of current and past employees, clients and suppliers. Our friends and family travelled near and far to celebrate and execute the night for us. There was a large display of new and old photos to reminisce on the 50 years of hard work and remarkable memories.

It's full steam ahead into 2024 as we quote and submit tenders this month for the early months next year. We are slowly growing our team and are always on the lookout for Truck Driver's and Machine Operators. 50 years of honest and reliable earthmoving.

2022 marks 50 years of Vernice Pty Ltd as an incorporated business. Half a century of successful operations is a huge milestone for any business, especially a family-owned one. This latest milestone follows many others we have been proud to achieve over the years including:

First ever machine purchase – Fowler Crawler Tractor, then bought a couple of AW tractors and dozers.
First brand new machine purchase– Leyland Hippo Truck 1966/7.
First major civil project – Campersic Road (City of Swan) and the Subdivision at Sandplain Road, Toodyay.
First Main Roads project – In the 1970’s, Vernice completed some dozer work (D7) on Toodyay Bindi-Bindi Road. The project was to widen and upgrade the road.
Other early Main Roads Projects - In the 1980s, the final section of the Great Northern Highway, Vernice wet hired the D9 Dozer to complete the last lot of bitumen/sealing. This section of the highway linked Halls Creek to Fitzroy Crossing.
Father to Sons – Transition for the control of quotations and projects to the Vern’s sons.
Directorship Handover – Michael, Stephen and Paul became directors of Vernice.
Major Projects including Airstrip construction in Onslow for Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forest, Minderoo Station gravel pushing and crushing and most recently the Yandin Windfarm, constructing infrastructure for 51 turbines.

2022 So Far

We have had a very busy 2022 so far.

We have been on projects that are in close proximity to Toodyay and have been loving it. A heap of machinery and plant were wet hired for the realignment of Great Eastern Highway for Decmil and Main Roads. A 2km stretch of the highway was realigned to make it more visible and safer for road users. Not only has it made it safer, it has allowed for an increase in productivity for trucks and prime movers.

After the completion in February, another 25km stretch of road was being upgraded along the Northam-Pithara Road. Service Stream were awarded the contract by Main Roads, and we were awarded the earthworks and civil contract for this project. The project continued until August, with many machines wet and dry hired including rollers , front-end-loaders , D8 dozer , graders and excavators as well as the new Hitachi Wheeled-17T Excavator.

Along side the Northam-Pithara road upgrade, a crew were living in Lancelin and completing a new intersection for Main Roads off Indian Ocean Drive. This was for farmers and road trains to access the new Lime Sands Pit to supply lime sand to the agricultural industry. The intersection will ensure the safe entry and exit, onto and off Indian Ocean Drive.

To more recent news, we have a number of projects on the go at the moment. We are pushing and screening gravel in Koojan in preparation for the upgrade of Koojan West Road. A crew will be heading to site shortly to start and complete the upgrades.

The Gingin Eco Lifestyle Village is now underway, with a team of operators with an Excavator , Dump Trucks , Graders and Rollers . The project is planned to have 120 homes and a club room all setup to be environmentally sustainable and eco friendly.

Yandin Wind Farm Project

Vernice are currently working on upgrades to Carrabin’s main roads

Owners : Alinta Energy

Date : August 2019 – December 2020

The Yandin Wind Farm – 175km north of Perth, near Dandaragan – comprises 51 turbines, each with a capacity of 4.2MW.

The joint venture between Ratch Australia and Alinta Energy was shaped by valued input from local community and landowners, and is expected to cost $400 million. Alinta Energy is managing the investment.

The connection to the Western Power network, through a 330kV terminal and 10km transmission line, was revealed by Decmil, who won the $79 million civil, electrical design, and construction contract. With electrification complete, the wind farm delivered its first output to the state’s grid, the South West Integrated System, on July 12 according to an Alinta spokesperson.

International manufacturer Vestas supplied the turbines. Decmil is completing balance of plant, and civil works for the turbine foundations. The first 34 of the 51 4.2MW Vestas turbines have been installed.

Now the biggest wind farm in Western Australia, the project’s earthworks were worth $10 million. Earthworks were carried out by 45 Vernice employees, and 12 employees of other contractors.

The Yandin Wind Farm will not only be the biggest in the state, it will also be one of the most efficient in the country, delivering an average capacity factor of 50 percent. Alinta CEO Jeff Dimery told RenewEconomy its cost will be well below $50/MWh .

Steps

Site clearing
Substation pads laid for site offices, laydown areas, batch plant, and the substation
51 holes were dug in preparation for concrete foundation
Once the foundation was set, the holes were backfilled with compaction testing using on-site sand and finished with gravel
The pad was completed with gravel, compacted and tested at regular intervals
Multiple pads were built to client specifications, including four temporary pads. Prior to project completion the temporary pads were destroyed and the land rehabilitated

The project covered numerous farms, with some turbine sites a 25min drive from the site offices. All access roads were created by Vernice.

Carrabin Main Roads Project

Vernice are currently working on upgrades to Carrabin’s main roads

Currently, we are working on extensive upgrades to the Great Western Highway in Carrabin, WA. This project has been enjoyable for every team member working on it and has utilised excavation techniques , roadwork/maintenance and earthmoving services .

We have been actively assisting with the re-alignment of sub-standard curves on east and west approaches to Carrabin, as well as making improvements to the information/parking bay access, roadhouse access, pavement and drainage around the area. Intersection improvements we’ve been involved with are located at Carrabin Siding Road and Westonia Road.

Vernice were also instrumental in the removal of an existing four way intersection. This upgrade will result in safer passing opportunities due to improved operad alignment and improved east-west access for oversized vehicles.

Quairading Road Works Project

Vernice executed the Quairading Road Works in collaboration with Ventia Opus

Vernice were involved in work that widened and improved a bridge near the Wheatbelt town of Quairading in Western Australia’s east. The transport minister pledged $650,000 to replacing the timber bridge on the York-Merredin Road near Quairading.

The existing bridge was replaced with a culvert, allowing for increased pavement width and future reconstruction of the road. The upgrade provided two 3.5 metre-wide lanes, one metre-wide sealed shoulders and 0.5 metre-wide unsealed shoulders on the road, as well as barriers above the culvert. Main Roads’ Wheatbelt Region managed the project, while Vernice worked in collaboration with Ventia Opus to carry out the work.

This exciting project ensured the road formation was widened to 12m, allowing for future reconstruction and provided a 9m seal, up from the previous 6.8m in that area.

Mauravillo Estate Project

Vernice successfully undertook the Mauravillo Estate project

The first phase of the Mauravillo Estate project was successfully executed by the team at Vernice. Currently, we are involved in stage 2 of the construction process.

All infrastructure access to the estate needed to be upgraded before the road construction commenced. Vernice tackled this challenge and ensured the infrastructure was of a high standard prior to the road construction .

Both stage 1 and 2 of the subdivision involved the construction of underground power, underground water and vehicle roads.

Lime Route Road Maintenance Project

Vernice are currently performing technical road maintenance works along Lime Route Road. We’ve been upgrading parts of the road to ensure the safe travel of lime carting trucks. The Lime Route is the route that trucks carting Lime Sand from the coast used to deliver it to farmers. Lime Sand is used to restore pH levels over crops.

Vernice executed the Catcon wind farm project in Badgingarra

Construction north of APA’s existing Emu Downs Wind Farm began in 2017 and was completed in 2019. In addition to the positive environmental impacts, the wind farm will also positively impact the residents of surrounding local towns and communities. This will stem from the creation of local employment opportunities and local businesses stimulation due to increased construction traffic and personnel. Vernice have provided first class earthmoving services to the area and have been instrumental in the overall success of the renewables project .

What is involved in building a wind farm?

The Badgingarra Wind Farm project involved creating the base of the wind power stations and constructing safe, strong access roads in between each of the farm entries. Throughout the project, 42 turbines were erected. We used several machines to complete this absolute mammoth of a job, including:

Water Trucks
Pad Foot Rollers and Smooth Drum Rollers
615 Scrapers
Dozers D9 D7
Road Train Side Tippers x2

14 employees were utilised throughout this project, and we were closely collaborating with Catcon throughout the process. Catcon were an exceptionally efficient and useful company to work with.

Dam Construction in the Shire of Cunderdin

The Shire of Cunderdin is around 150km ENE of Perth, WA. Vernice were successful in the tendering process and began the large dam construction project back in 2019.

The project consisted of many machines from the Vernice fleet, including;

We move dirt in many ways at Vernice Pty Ltd. In part 1 we show you how we load material with a truck and trailer combination.

This can be with one or 2 trailers or even a tipper truck. To get the material into the trailer(s) we do require a machine to lift the mass amounts we move. For example, we can use a front end loader or an excavator to load the dirt into the trailer. A loader is more efficient for piles of dirt as the buckets are larger, however, if we move dirt straight from a cut or a hole, an excavator will do the trick.

Indian Ocean Drive Upgrades

Vernice are currently working on upgrades to Indian Ocean Drive

Currently, we are working on the Indian Ocean Drive north of Woodridge. The project includes 40kms worth of widening and intersection modifications at Guilderton, KW Road and Lancelin.

Director, Stephen Ferguson, has been the main operator of the project. Operating the 375 Dozer, 20T Excavator and 140H Grader, Stephen has shown off his skills and even learning new ones on the job. Technology is being used to build roads to specific levels and grades. Stephen says 'You are never too old to learn new tricks.'

The widening of the roads will significantly improve road safety and provide safer overtaking opportunities. The works are due to be completed by June 2020.

What is a loader?

Loaders are heavy equipment machines utilised on construction worksites to move aside or load various materials such as asphalt, dirt, snow, feed, grave, raw materials, etc. Loaders can also be used on major mining or forestry projects within Australia. Today, we are seeing a wide increase of loader suppliers which are hiring loaders for either short-term, long-term or buying these machines used.

Loader operational history

Before inspecting the loader itself, you should examine the machines operational history. The operational history usually includes how many hours the machine has been operated, what year the machine was manufactured, the working condition and the price. This is a great starting point as it will paint a bit of a picture before visually inspecting the loader.

Hydraulic system and engine

When inspecting if the specific loader is right for your project, the first visual check that should be conducted is examination of the hydraulic system and engine. As the hydraulic system is the most vital component of the loader, take your time ensuring everything is in excellent working order. Check the hose couplings for any splits, breaks or scratches which can cause leakage in the system. The cylinders also need to be examined for any sort of dents, leaks or holes as fluid leakage could also occur and contaminants may make their way in.

If the engine parts aren’t checked thoroughly, this could result in the loader not being able to function. Inspect the engine for any noticeable leaks and loose timing belts as this can result in the engine not starting. Air filter checks should also occur as prevention of debris entering the engine ensures longer engine life. The most recent service date should be recorded on the filter to ensure when the next service needs to take place.

Centre articulation point

The centre articulation point is another major aspect of a wheeled loader and can tell you the story of how well maintained the loader is. Located underneath the cabin midpoint, it goes through many elements which can lead to wear of the articulation point. If major wear is present, you could see and may experience shifts in the up-and-down movement of the top and bottom pins while being operated.

Cabin and general operation

In the cabin section, check for any loose grip holdings or an insecure ladder. Make sure to also take note of the condition of the seat, foot pedals and joysticks. Replacement for these features can be a bit costly, so ensure everything is in good working order.

Checking the operational system is essential in the longevity of the loader. Start off by turning the loader on, making note of how the machine sounds as well as checking that all the gauges are functional – this includes the back-up alarm. Check if there is a squeaking or unconventional noises when operating the bucket or other loader attachments, inspect if the machine has been lubricated or if there is internal damage.

Frame, ROPS, FOPS

Inspecting the structural integrity and framework of the loader will determine the safety of the machine, in the event of a machine rollover. If the loader comes with an enclosed canopy, check for cracking or other external damage that could lower a person’s safety. If however the machine does not come with the canopy, ensure that the roll over protection structure (ROPS) does not have bending or damage that could give way in the event of a rollover. When checking the falling object protective structure (FOPS), be sure to examine the side screens for any external damage that could cause harm to an operator.

Attachments and technology upgrades

Attachments and technology upgrades can generally add value to any loader, as long as they are in good condition. When it comes to inspecting the bucket for the loader, be sure to check for any missing, loose or worn-down teeth. If teeth are worn or missing from the bucket, the loader will struggle to lift or grab materials for the project needed. Moving on from the front, look at the side panels and make a note of any holes, cracks, splitting or repairs such as welding. This is a sign that the bucket has not seen regular maintenance and could affect your project’s workflow.

With the recent bushfires around Australia, and with more dry weather on the way entering summer, we will teach you how to create a firebreak and the importance they play in the protection against bushfires.

What is a firebreak?

A firebreak is a gap, or strip of land, where all trees, shrubs and other ‘combustible’ materials have been cleared to create a ‘fuel free’ zone. This gap provides an area of reduced fuel loads for the fire, which acts as a barrier and preventative method in stopping or slowing down the progress of a bushfire. Firebreaks are often constructed using machines including dozers, front-end loaders, tractors and skid-steer loaders. They can also be created using hand tools such as controlled back burning, ploughing and herbicide treatment, to name a few.

Step 1: Check council requirements

It is important to check with local councils surrounding firebreak requirements, and to see what your responsibilities are. Checking with local fire authorities to see when you can burn excess material and how big the fire can be is important as fire bans may be in place. Fines may be applied if you don’t maintain your property appropriately. Each local government determines their own minimum firebreak standards and how these standards apply to various property sizes.

Step 2: Clearing vegetation

To be effective, the required width for a firebreak depends on the nature of surrounding fuels. It is recommended by authorities that firebreaks be at least three metres wide to allow for vehicles to pass through. Using machinery, vegetation including trees and shrubs are cleared to create the required width and create a clearing. It is essential to prune tall trees on either side so that embers cannot get across the firebreak easily.

Step 3: Poison

To create a more effective firebreak, poison grass at the base so they do not grow back. Take precautions using poison and check how much you should use and how often it should be sprayed.

Step 4: Burning off excess green waste

Burning off excess leaves, branches, deadwood and other green waste are vital in reducing the chances of the bushfire spreading. Burning off excess waste must comply with local legal requirements, and should be small controlled burns.

Step 5: Maintaining a firebreak

Maintaining a firebreak throughout the year can prepare you for the incoming bushfire seasons. Cutting down grasses and trees in winter and autumn can help to ensure you are ready for the possibility of a bushfire in the drier months.

Transporting heavy machinery

Transporting heavy equipment and machinery is no easy task but making sure you have completed all pre-emptive measures is the first step to avoid any unnecessary injury or damage of machinery.

1. Risk Assessment

The first step is to conduct a risk assessment. If there were to be any issues during the transportation process, risk assessments allow you to prove how detailed and thorough your fleet management processes are - not to mention it makes permit applications easier. Documentation should include a full operation and transportation timeline, weight loads, relevant project risks and how they have been managed.

2. Machinery Dimensions

Next, make sure you know the weight, dimensions and any other hazardous information regarding your machinery that the service company should be aware of for the move. Knowing what size your cargo is will help determine the type of transportation service you need, as machinery is often bulky with non-conforming shapes. If the transfer is overseas, heavy machinery can be easily mis-declared, and some domestic moving services may only specialise in small or large cargo moves.

3. Inspect your hauling vehicle

Before you load on the heavy machinery, you’ll need to do an inspection of the hauling vehicle. A complete inspection should include the following:

Weight : Make sure that the machinery adheres to the weight capacity of the truck or trailer.
Brakes : The oversized load will affect the vehicles’ breaking abilities, so make sure all break functions are working smoothly.
Tires : Heavy machinery will affect the condition of tires quickly, so make sure the tires are in good condition and that the pressure is high.
Lights : All front, breaking and indicator lights should work without any problem.
Tie-down points : Check that the load will be able to be properly secured on the transport vehicle. Any machinery with attachments need to have them removed and secured separately. Make sure that there are at least accessible 4 tie-down points for the machinery to be correctly secured.

4. Loading the machinery

Before you can send your cargo on its way, you need to be able to safely load it onto the transportation vehicle. Here are a couple more steps to make sure that the loading process is able to go smoothly:

Clear the surrounding area : Make sure that the area around the loading zone is clear of debris or of anything that could obstruct the loading process.
Designate duties : Giving all involved team members clear instruction will reduce the risk of accidents occurring due to confusion. Ensure that anyone not involved in the loading process is safe and away from any potential hazard.
Line up the machine and ramp : As the machinery is being loaded onto the truck or trailer, it’s centre of gravity will shift and the vehicle’s weight will be in a point of limbo. Continue loading the machine on slow and steady.

Chain down the cargo: Make sure the vehicle and its attachments are properly secured and stable so that the transportation process is able to continue smoothly.

Mobile jaw crusher plant are specialised mining and excavation equipment used in open pit mines, designed for three main purposes, for crushing material, screening/sorting material and conveying material to its destination at the mining site. This material might by rock, sand, soil, earth, limestone, gravel, coal, aggregate etc. The work by applying strong compressive force against the material through a pair of jaws, one stationary fixed jaw and one moveable jaw. The material is fed through a V-shaped crushing chamber into the jaws, where the exit at the bottom is narrower than the opening at the top. The size of the opening is used to determine the size of a jaw crusher, a 32 x 36 jaw crusher therefore has an opening of 32 inches by 36 inches, while a 54 x 54 crusher has an opening of 56 inches by 56 inches.

The space at the bottom of the crushing chamber will determine the size of the crushed material afterwards. The difference is defined as a ratio, such as 6:1 or 8:1. This The crushing power needed to operate the crushing chamber is generated by a motor connected to a flywheel, which transfers inertia from the flywheel to the crusher. Because of the large material sizes fed into mobile jaw crushers, these machines need to be robustly constructed.

Differences between a jaw crusher and other types of crushers

The different types of crushers can be separated into several different categories. There are four ways to crush material, impact, attrition, shear and compression. There are also further classified into primary, secondary and tertiary crushers based on what stage of crushing they complete. Primary crushers receive material directly from the mine or excavation source. Secondary crushers are fed from the primary to reduce the size of the material further. Tertiary crushers are very similar, reducing the size of material fed from a secondary crusher even further. There in fact may be more than three stages of crushing, however any crusher used for any crushing stages at the third stage or beyond is defined as a tertiary crusher.

Jaw crushers are primary crushers, which use compressive force to reduce material size. Other types of crushers include:

Impact Crusher/Hammer Crusher - Uses impact force to crush material and is usually used to crush soft and non-abrasive materials.
Roller Crusher - Roller crushers are compression crushers that use two rotating metal cylinders to crush material between them. These types of crushers are typically tertiary crushers, due to their low reduction ratio and are best suited for crushing fine material.
Cone Crusher/ Gyratory Crusher -Cone crushers use a gyrating spindle in the centre, which is crushed between a mantle and a bowl liner or concave. This type of crushing is used for with primary or secondary crushing.
